An LED Driver is a voltage converter that regulates the power required by an LED or LED array.
It’s a bit like a car’s cruise control, the level of power required varies throughout the LED as the temperature rises and falls.
Without the right LED Driver, LEDs will become too hot and unstable, causing malfunction or adversely affecting performance. To ensure that the LEDs work properly, an LED Driver is needed to provide stable power to the LEDs.

LED Driver Features
- Provides low voltage
An LED bulb operates at voltages ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 volts and currents up to 30 milliamps (mA). Household lighting consists of several bulbs connected in series and in parallel requiring a total voltage of 12 to 24 direct current (V DC).The LED Driver rectifies the alternating current (AC) and reduces the level to suit the requirements. This means that the high AC supply voltage of 120 to 277 volts is converted to the low DC voltage required.
- Protection for LED Lighting
LED Drivers provide protection against current and voltage fluctuations in LED Lighting. The LED Driver ensures that the voltage and current of the LED Lighting remains within the operating range of the LED, regardless of fluctuations in the mains power supply. This protection avoids supplying too much voltage and current, which would reduce the luminosity of the LED, and too low a current, which would reduce the light output.
Types of LED Driver
- Internal LED drivers

Internal LED drivers are mounted together with the LED Lighting. For home lighting, easy to change bulbs.
- External LED drivers

External LED drivers are installed separately from LED Lighting for outdoor, commercial, and street lighting applications. To make it easier and cheaper to replace bulls/drivers, these types of Lighting require separate Drivers. in most of these applications, the manufacturer specifies the type of LED drivers to be used for a particular Lighting.
Most LED Lighting failures are caused by driver failures, and it is easier to replace or repair external drivers than internal LED drivers.
How to choose a LED Driver?
- Current and Voltage Mode: LED Driver is Constant Current or Constant Voltage.
- Constant current drivers provide a fixed output current with a wide range of output voltages. For example, a constant current driver should have an output current of 700 milliamps (mA) and an output voltage range of 4 to 13 volts DC (V DC).
- To stabilise the voltage (e.g. 12 or 24 Volts) of a power LED system, constant voltage LED divers provide a fixed output voltage and a maximum regulated output current. Typical drivers can provide 24 Volts and a maximum output current of 1.04 Amps (A).
- Size: Suitable for the area to be fixed.
- The International Protection Marking (IPM) defines the degree of protection that mechanical and electronic equipment can provide against solid foreign body intrusion (including body parts such as fingers, dust, grit, etc.), liquid penetration, and accidental contact.
